Audi RS 6 Avant GT: 660 units of the most unique modern family car

The zenith of the RS range with 630 HP pays tribute to Audi's history in motorsport

In a world of uncertainty in which many brands are making the transition towards electrification, at different speeds, some manufacturers are betting heavily on combustion engines that have given us so much joy and spectacular sounds over the years. Audi, with its long tradition linked to motorsport, is one of these, launching a new version of the RS 6 Avant on the market, a very special one: the RS 6 Avant GT, which is positioned as the new top of the range and will be manufactured as a limited edition. to 660 units in total. It is the maximum expression of the RS range and the closest thing you will see to a family racing car.

The basis of the Audi RS 6 Avant GT is the RS 6 GTO, a prototype that was shown to the public in 2020. This RS 6 GTO was manufactured by a small team of twelve trainee trainees of body mechanics and vehicle construction, painting and automotive, with the support and supervision of Audi Design. A six-month project that had as inspiration, both in shapes and design, the Audi 90 quattro IMSA GTO that swept the American competition in 1989 thanks to its all-wheel drive against its own competition made up of rivals from the land of the opportunities. Possibly one of Audi’s most legendary cars, the one that made its white, red and black iconic as sports colors along with the Audi Quattro in rallies.

From the prototype of the RS 6 GTO, the RS 6 Avant GT has been developed, conceived as a true beast for all types of uses. It is the first series production car with a carbon fiber hood manufactured by Audi Sport. The front with its grill and air intakes has been maintained from the aforementioned prototype, in addition to the color combination from the 90 quattro IMSA GTO. The 22-inch multi-radial wheels differ from the ‘hubcaps’ of the prototype, in turn coming from the racing car, in addition to the fact that in this case there is no number and the rear part is cleaner than the RS 6 GTO. Even so, they are quite similar cars, especially since the same rear wing has been taken from the prototype.

The Audi RS 6 Avant GT will be the most exclusive of all the RS 6, a car that is already exclusive due to its positioning in the market. As an additional detail, the RS 6 Avant GT is the first RS 6 that does not have roof rails. Now, not all RS 6 Avant GTs will be Arkona white: there will be units finished in Mythos black and others with Nardo gray bodywork, combining the vinyls differently. Instead of being assembled in Neckarsulm like all RS 6 Avants, the RS 6 Avant GT will be built at Böllinger Höfe, the plant dedicated to the Audi R8 and e-tron GT.

Mechanics of the Audi RS 6 Avant GT

Under the hood we find the already known 4.0 TFSI engine of the RS 6 Avant, a biturbo V8 that for this version goes from 600 to 630 horsepower and 850 Nm of torque instead of 800. The RS 6 Avant GT goes from 0 to 100 in just 3.3 seconds, improving the RS 6 Avant’s records by three tenths. The brand claims that it goes from 0 to 200 kilometers per hour in 10.5 seconds, a second and a half faster than the normal RS 6 Avant, reaching a top speed of 305 kilometers per hour that, hopefully (in several ways), It will only be seen on an Autobahn or circuit with long straights.

The engine is mated to the eight-speed Tiptronic gearbox and, of course, features quattro all-wheel drive. Like the RS 6 Avant with the performance pack, the Avant GT has a state-of-the-art self-locking center differential that redistributes engine power depending on situations. By default, it has a 40:60 configuration towards the rear axle, but you can change it to correct understeer and oversteer. Audi claims that it can redistribute up to 70% to the front axle and up to 85% to the rear, so that driving dynamics are gained.

At the suspension level it has new features since, as an optional element, Audi includes an adjustable coilover suspension, being able to lower the suspension by up to 10 millimeters compared to the RS 6 Avant. Its elasticity, triple-adjustable shock absorbers and stabilizers that are 30% stiffer at the front and a spectacular 80% stiffer at the rear limit body roll, almost ignoring the fact that we are dealing with a car that weighs more than 2.2 tons. . Inside, red, black and copper stand out on the stitching of the steering wheel and the sides of the center console, as well as on the RS bucket seats. Other elements are made of black microfiber, while the red belts recall the relationship with racing.

How much does the Audi RS 6 Avant GT cost?

Each of the 660 units of the Audi RS 6 Avant GT that will be manufactured cost around 266,750 euros, clearly positioning itself above the rest of the RS range. Each one of them is numbered, as is expected in special editions. Specifically, for Spain, ten units in total will be allocated, numbered from 600 to 609. Of these ten units, five will be Arkona white, two Mythos black and three Nardo gray. As standard, these ten units that will arrive in Spain come with RS bucket seats and adjustable coilover suspension.

These 660 Audi RS 6 Avant GT that will be assembled at Böllinger Höfe are assembled by hand. The specific elements for this version are assembled by hand: the carbon fiber hood, the wings, the side skirts, the rear spoiler, the front and rear aprons and the adjustable coilover suspension. Seven special Audi employees located at three assembly stations will be responsible for the assembly of these very special 660 Audis.
