Ferrari 12Cilindri: The naturally aspirated V12s are still valid

With this new aesthetic and mechanical masterpiece, those from Maranello surprise the world again

In a world where it is increasingly common to find hybridized engines in cases of supercars and hypercars, with the electric impulse accompanying the gasoline ones to give it extra oomph. And yet, in just a few days, new luxury supercars and Gran Turismos with V12 engines have appeared, which already seemed condemned to ostracism, to memories, museums and history books. This is the case of the new Ferrari Gran Turismo, the so-called 12Cilindri that honors the Gran Turismo of the fifties and sixties.

The car was presented in Miami Beach in Florida, United States – and it is no coincidence, since the 12Cilindri arrives at the moment that marks 70 years since the arrival of the Italian brand to the United States at an official level. An aesthetic that is largely reminiscent of the Ferrari 365 GTB4 and GTS4 Daytona – a surname that, in fact, was never official, but was awarded after Ferrari’s victory in the 1967 24 Hours of Daytona, being in fact a triplet Of the brand.

An interesting aspect in the conception of the 12Cilindri is that its wheelbase is 20 millimeters shorter than that of the Maranello brand’s previous Gran Turismo, the 812 Superfast, although it is not the same chassis but rather a completely new one. The suspension geometry, starting with the shock absorber towers, has been designed to improve torsional rigidity compared to the predecessor model. In the manufacture of the chassis, a secondary alloy made of recycled materials has been used to manufacture the shock towers of the gearbox subframe, which saves 146kg of CO2 for every 12Cilindri that is manufactured.

It is a very attractive and spectacular design that clearly reminds us of the Daytona, convincing almost the entire motorsport world right away – this time, unlike the Purosangue, the controversy has not been in the car itself but in the name. that has been chosen for the creature, as descriptive as Maserati was with the Quattroporte. A two-seater (not a 2+2 like other Ferrari GTs) V12 with a front engine that continues the tradition of the brand. It is more Gran Turismo than shooting brake, although it meets their condition of having a large body and two doors. Of course, it also has a convertible version, the 12Cilindri Spider, with its sound that can be enjoyed in the open air.

Ferrari 12Cilindri mechanics

Under the hood in the front axle is the F140HD, the company’s naturally aspirated V12 that on this occasion delivers 830 horsepower and 678 Nm of torque, rotating up to 9,500 revolutions per minute. Ferrari highlights that 80% of the engine torque is available from 2,500 so that it is not a sharp engine but rather a more rounded one, more ideal for use on the road like a Gran Turismo. It has opening and closing of valves from Formula 1 cars thanks to its DLC (diamond-type carbon) sliding finger, which reduces the coefficient of friction in the most delicate couplings.

Ferrari has also mounted its variable displacement oil pump on this 12Cilindri so that the right and necessary oil flows according to the speed and load of the engine, managing both the oil and the vapors in the crankcase. The gasoline injection system consists of two fuel pumps and four rails with pressure sensors, and can manage up to three injections per engine cycle. In order to pass all current emissions regulations around the world, the exhaust system has a ceramic catalyst along with the particulate filter. It has an eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox, the same as the Ferrari SF90 Stradale but with a new conical gear that improves torque availability and reduces shift times.

Inside, in the 12Cilindri we find up to three screens, the 10.25-inch center console, the 15.6-inch dashboard screen and one more for the co-pilot area of 8.8 inches. The approach is similar to that of the Roma, Purosangue and Spider with the double cabin almost symmetrical. The buttons have a low profile and, in addition to the connectivity options that we can find in most luxury cars, it also has a wireless charging mat as standard in the central tunnel. As an optional element, it can have a 15-speaker sound system developed together with Burmester.

Precisely the sound is key in a naturally aspirated Ferrari V12, with 6-in-1 collectors on each bank, optimizing the sound based on the intake line, the exhaust line, the ducts and the internal deflectors of the exhaust turbos. Literally, every curve of the exhaust system is made like a musical instrument so that what it sounds like is a real orchestra. Other innovations are the brake-by-wire, the ABS Evo of the 296 GTB or the 6D sensor that guarantees maximum precision to the Virtual Short Wheelbase 3.0 or Virtual Short Wheelbase (PCV) and Side Slip Control (SSC) systems. ) 8.0, as well as a reduction in braking distances and greater repeatability of the braking action. It also equips the aspirated torque shaping system to make the delivery as linear as possible.

The 12Cilindri does not have a conventional rear spoiler but rather mounts two active appendages on the rear window. It has low downforce and high downforce configuration. At high load, it focuses on maintaining the maximum vertical load, while at low load the moving element is placed in a horizontal position to minimize air resistance, maintaining this configuration above the 300 kilometers per hour that this V12 beast can reach. .

As in the Ferrari 812 Competizione, in the 12Cilindri we find the independent four-wheel steering system to improve cornering and responsiveness when changing direction, a system that has been demonstrating its effectiveness for decades. The weight is distributed 48.4% on the front axle and 51.6% on the rear to offer unparalleled response to be crowned the best Gran Turismo that those from Maranello have created to date.
